Are you missing travel? With much of the world remaining in some form of lockdown and travel restrictions still in place, many will have had to cancel or postpone their summer holidays while the pandemic is brought under control. Travel industry research suggests up to £7bn could be owed in customer refunds.
But in tough times, you still need to take a break. You could be bored silly on furlough or an exhausted key worker. Either way, there are plenty of ways to recreate that holiday atmosphere from the comfort of your own home!
Transform your garden
When the sun is shining it’s hard to beat relaxing in your garden. If yours is in need of a revamp, now could be a good time to assess your finances and create something to beat any resort or holiday park.
Take things up a notch by setting up a hammock, a drinks station and getting lost in a good book. You could even fill a paddling pool to help you cool off as and when you need to.
If you love nothing better than a camping holiday, why not set up a tent and sleep under the stars?
Get experimental in the kitchen
For foodies, trying new ingredients and flavours can be one of the most exciting elements of a holiday. With more spare time on your hands, why not have a go at recreating a memorable holiday meal or try your hand at something completely new?
Or perhaps you prefer to sit back and let others do the cooking for you on holiday. In which case, order a takeaway, set the garden table and eat al fresco as the sun sets.
Turn your bathroom into a spa
If you always make sure to book in at a hotel or resort with plenty of options for pampering, you could have fun creating a spa environment at home instead. Enjoy a luxurious bubble bath with subtle scented candles, or trade beauty treatments with your partner or housemates.
A rejuvenating massage could be just what you need to recover if you’ve got into heavy home workouts during lockdown!
Switch off
First and foremost, holidays offer a break from our routine and an opportunity to switch off from the stresses of our day-to-day lives. Even while stuck at home, it’s important to keep at least some of your pre-booked annual leave in place and take some time out to recharge.
On average we spend over 2.5 hours a day on our smartphones. Why not imagine you’re holidaying somewhere remote without internet access and turn off all but essential notifications?
Try these tips to help you ‘get away’ this summer. And if all else fails, use the time to plan the trip of a lifetime for next year instead!
